Travelling with your jewellery: pencil case, storage, anti-knots
Suitcase ready, looks planned… The most delicate step remains: transporting your jewelry without knots, scratches and stress.
This guide brings together workshop and user best practices for preparing an effective jewelry bag,
choosing anti-shock & anti-humidity storage, and mastering anti-knotting techniques for chains and necklaces.
Our Ylume creations are 18 k gold plated (3 μ), matte champagne shade and free of nickel, lead, cadmium,
designed to travel beautiful… and come back intact.
anti-humidity bags and wipe with a soft cloth after each wear.
By plane: jewelry in the cabin, never in the hold.
Pre-departure checklist (10 minutes flat)
1) Take inventory
- 1 pair of versatile hoop earrings (Ø 16–22 mm).
- 1–2 medallion necklaces (45 cm + 60 cm).
- 1–2 fine/medium rushes .
- Rings: 1 signature + 1 fine stackable (max. 3 in total).
2) Sort by use
- Day (travel, visits) → smooth and light pieces.
- Evening (restaurant, celebration) → add the 60 cm chain / a second bangle.
- Beach/pool → jewelry in the trunk (do not swim in it).
4 pieces, 10 possible looks.
Ideal kit: compact, compartmentalized, breathable
A good jewelry bag prevents 90% of incidents. Three criteria make the difference:
Separate compartments, soft & breathable material, reliable closures.
| Element | To be | What for | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compartments | Individual pockets + buckle bar + chain | Each piece is insulated → no scratches or tangles | One large “tote” compartment |
| Material | Heavyweight cotton, suede, microfiber | Soft, limits condensation, protects against micro-scratches | Unlined rigid plastics |
| Closure | Fluid zip + internal | Nothing escapes during the checks | Magnetic flap without internal partition |
| Anti-humidity | silica gel/clay sachet | Slows oxidation in humid | No moisture absorbers |
one bag per piece, then all in a small zipped pouch.
Anti-knots: 8 proven techniques (necklaces & chains)
The chains get tangled when they move freely and rub against the pendants.
The idea: to immobilize them and separate each chain.
- Straws/reusable straws : Thread one end of the chain through the straw, close. Perfect for 45 cm.
- Cling film : spread the chain flat on a rectangle, fold. Ultra-flat, very efficient.
- Perforated cardboard : drill 2 holes, fix the clasp on one side, the pendant on the other.
- Micro zip bags : close the chain, leaving the chain protruding by 1 cm (closed). One bag per chain.
- Suede plate : wrap the chain in one direction, the pendant in the other, hold in place with a tab.
- Burrito roll : line up 3 spaced chains on a square of microfiber, roll tight, soft elastic.
- Separate capsules : small individual rigid cases for “statement” necklaces.
- Store clasp closed : Never leave a chain open in the pencil case.
oil (or hand cream), gently separate with two fine pins, blot with a soft cloth.
Protect buckles, rings & rings during transport
Earrings (including hoop earrings)
- Attach the pairs to a support (cardboard, perforated tape) so as not to separate them.
- Close the hoop earrings with the click before storage.
- Slip each pair into a mini pouch or a dedicated pocket.
See our Creoles.
Rings
- Thread several rings onto a foam roller (or a microfiber-coated pencil).
- Place the set in an internal zippered pocket.
- If you have a precious ring: keep it in the cabin, never in the hold.
Bangles & bracelets
- Stack 2–3 rods separated by microfiber to avoid micro-marks.
- Choose a hard compartment if your luggage is very compressed.
- Daily transport: wrist opposite the watch to limit shocks.
Plane, train, hotel: best safety practices
By plane
- Cabin : jewelry and pencil case always in the cabin luggage.
- Control: you can keep your jewellery worn (except for special instructions).
- Moisture: slip a moisture sachet into the kit (reusable).
At the hotel / rental
- Use the bedroom chest for pieces you don’t wear.
- Avoid leaving jewelry on the sink (water, products, slipping in the drain).
- Store every evening in cotton pouches, chains closed.
Common sense: swimming, sleeping or playing sports with your jewelry increases the likelihood of loss and wear and tear. Instead, remove them and store them in a dry place.
Climate & destination: adapting your reflexes
| Background | Risk | Precautions |
|---|---|---|
| Tropical / Wet | Condensation, sweat, sunscreen | Anti-humidity bag, wipe after wear, no swimming with jewelry |
| Mountain / cold | Scarves, rubbing, shocks | Hoop earrings Ø 14–16 mm, no long pendants under the hat/scarf |
| City-trip | Multiple manipulations (bags, jackets) | Choose smooth profiles & secure clasps, compact kit |
| Beach | Salt, sand, sunscreen | Remove jewelry, store in a dry (safe), wipe if exposed |
Travel Maintenance Routine (30 seconds in the evening)
- Wipe each piece with a soft dry cloth (dust, sweat, cream).
- Close the chains and store them separately (pouches/bags).
- Insert a moisture-wicking bag into the kit, especially in hot climates.
This simple routine extends the shine of the 18k (3 μ) gilding and respects the matte
champagne finish of Ylume jewelry without nickel, lead or cadmium.

FAQ — Travelling with your jewellery
Should you put your jewelry in the hold?
No. Jewellery travels with you in the cabin: less risk of loss, theft and shock.
How do you avoid chain knots when traveling?
Close each chain and store it separately : straw, cling film, micro zip bag or microfiber roll.
Swimming pool and sea: do I keep my jewellery?
It is better to remove them. Salt, chlorine, sand and sunscreens accelerate wear. Store in a dry bag.
What is the minimum maintenance during the stay?
A dry soft cloth every evening, closed chains, separate pouches and a moisture pack in the kit.
Which Ylume pieces are the easiest to travel to?
Hoop earrings Ø 16–20 mm smooth, medallions 45/60 cm and a fine/medium bangle. 18k gold plated (3 μ), nickel, lead, cadmium free.
